Ever since ChatGPT was released in late 2022, we have been seeing massive advances in various artificial intelligence technologies of the likes that eclipses the last few decades. Suddenly, it seems that computers can do things that it only seemed could be done by humans, such as complex image and text generation, and these new technologies have also spurred improvements in translations technologies.
These things hint at a future where learning foreign languages (a very difficult and time-consuming endeavor) may become a thing of the past; after all, if computers can do all translation and interpretation in real-time, will there really be a need to learn a foreign language anymore?
Being familiar with some AI technologies, and very invested in language learning, I decided to think about this and use Japanesque: Episode 5 to give my take on whether language learning will continue to be relevant in the next decade or two. You can find the episode on Spotify here.
