Piano album release: “Fractal Coast” by If Pianos Could

(Jump right to the album songs here)

I’ve collected a bunch of improvised piano songs that I made over the last few months after the release of my previous album and have just released them as a new album titled “Fractal Coast”. The style is somewhat similar to my other albums, though I am always trying to create new ideas in my music to keep the listener engaged.

Thanks to Jim Miles for being a beta listener to the initial songs on this album. His feedback motivated to create and include two new songs. Also thanks to my wife for giving informative feedback on these songs.

Generally I don’t force myself to try and improvise; I only do it when the right mood strikes me and there is time when I am at home. As a result I hope that these songs sound fresh to you, and you can feel something from at least a few of them.

The title “Fractal Coast” is a reference to how these songs are (obviously) not completely random, nor are they completely structured or composed. They are a stream-of-consciousness mix between whatever comes to me at the moment, plus some sort of structure that I try to impose (sometimes at a small scale like repeating a phrase, but sometimes at a higher scale like repeating a melody several times throughout the song, though this is a major oversimplification). In a sense much of my music is made up of tiny pieces of other songs that I’ve played or heard that ended up stuck somewhere in my subconscious, and ultimately I think that is much of what makes art. Also, I think it goes without saying, but I never use any AI tools or anything like that for my music (:

You can listen to the entire 30-song album free on SoundCloud here. I have also enabled downloading of tracks, so you can get them and listen on whatever platform you like. If you have trouble using SoundCloud for any reason, let me know and I would be glad to give you the sound files.

I often think about ideas to add new instruments (whether digital or acoustic), though the extra time to do that means I often end up giving up and just going with solo piano. But if you would like to hear any specific instruments with the piano, please let me know.

While this album is free, if you want to support my music you can considering buying my previous album “Flow”.
