Self Taught Japanese to Begin Online Japanese Classes [BETA]

By | April 13, 2020

Because of the unfortunate situation in the world at this time, many people are turning to online options to continue their learning, social interactions, or even exercise. Blogs like this one already take advantage of the internet, and if anything I have seen a rise in hits over the last few weeks. But I’ve been thinking that now is the perfect time to take some initial steps into a new area of Japanese teaching: live online classes.

I have a small number of students I have been teaching face-to-face, and when I recently did a lesson with one of them over the internet I found it surprisingly easy to interact; except for a few technical issues things went pretty smoothly, although it’s clear I will need to put some more thought into teaching online more effectively.

This motivated me to try and expand things to a wider audience, hence my announcement today that I am now searching for people interested in two types of online classes: one-on-one tutoring, and small- to medium-sized group classes.

Initially I am planning on a few free classes, maybe one free class per person and several for the group setting. If things go well, at some point I will probably change to a pay model, but I hope to be competitive with similar services.

I haven’t decided on the exact technology I will be using, but I want to find something that has high quality audio and video for a moderate number of attendants. Other class details, such as length, frequency, and content I haven’t finalized yet either, and those will be based partially on feedback and ideas I receive from others. Since grammar is one of the focuses of this blog, I could pick a grammar pattern and go over that in detail, using different examples. I also could go over texts and translation ideas, like a truly “live” version of my TransLiterary Lab series.

In any case, if you are interested please send me an email at “selftaughtjapanese.classes (at) gmail.com” (replace the (at) with the proper character) with the title “Online Japanese Classes”. If you can tell me a little about how long you have studied Japanese, and what types of classes you would be interested in, that would be great.

There is a limited number of people I will be able to handle, and I will offer invitations to meetings on a first-come first-served basis.

I’m really looking forward to meeting and talking with many of you, and I hope that I will be able to help you progress in your Japanese studies.
